There are crimes of obvious guilt, where the defendant is guilty, where the victim never deserved what happened. There are attempted justifications by the criminal that are seen as irrelevant. However in the case of Daniel Steele, a 24 year old shop worker with learning difficulties and trauma issues who assaults his unsympathetic supervisor, it becomes plain that it is not as open and closed as it first appears. For DS Michael Rivers it brings back painful memories and makes him truly wonder where his loyalties lie.
